The Science of Natural Healing

In the 21st century, the Western paradigm for healthcare is changing. Notwithstanding the great strengths of medical science, many people now have concerns about key features of our health-care system—among them, the widespread use of medical drugs and a relative de-emphasis on preventive care. But traditional Western medicine is not the only healing system rooted in science. Medical systems from other cultures, including those of India and China, have used natural treatments for centuries, some of which are now directly influencing our own health-care professions. These approaches not only emphasize healing with natural substances, but devote considerable attention to illness prevention and healthful living by considering the whole person rather than just targeting a condition.

The Inexplicable Universe: Unsolved Mysteries

Professor Neil deGrasse Tyson presents--

... his compelling and informative online lecture The Inexplicable Universe: Unsolved Mysteries.

Everything we now know about the universe—from the behavior of quarks to the birth of entire galaxies—has stemmed from scientists who’ve been willing to ponder the unanswerable. And with the advent of modern science, great minds have turned to testing and experimentation rather than mere thought as a way of approaching and grappling with some of the universe’s most pressing and vexing dilemmas.

So what is our latest picture of some of the most inexplicable features of the universe? What still remains to be uncovered? What are some of the next avenues of exploration for today’s chemists, physicists, biologists, and astronomers?

“We know a lot about the universe. But there’s even more that we don’t know,” says astrophysicist and Professor Neil deGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium, an award-winning lecturer, and one of the world’s foremost experts on the secrets of the universe. And his course The Inexplicable Universe: Unsolved Mysteries is the perfect gateway into this mind-bending and eye-opening subject. This visually stunning course, which has been honored with a 2013 Telly Award for Outstanding Educational Program, features six self-contained lectures that transport you on a marvelous journey to the frontiers of the known (and unknown) universe and introduce you to tantalizing questions being addressed by the world’s top scientists.

Our Night Sky

Award-winning astronomer
and Professor Edward M. Murphy presents--

For thousands of years, the star-filled sky has been a source of wonder, discovery, entertainment, and instruction. Ancient people from nearly every continent and culture wove exciting stories about the mythological figures they saw in the heavens. People also used the sun, moon, and stars for time keeping and navigation. And careful observers throughout Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and elsewhere kept precise astronomical records, eventually paving the way for the Scientific Revolution and its remarkable discoveries about the nature of the universe.

Making Healthy Food Taste Great

...from The Everyday Gourmet Series--

When you hear the words “healthy food,” it’s all too easy to think of bland, uninspired, or unfamiliar food that takes all the pleasure out of cooking and eating. What often prevents us from practicing healthy eating habits is the wealth of misinformation out there, about what foods are healthy and the idea that we have to sacrifice the flavor-- which makes food such an enjoyable part of life.
The Everyday Gourmet: Making Healthy Food Taste Great
“It’s not about micromanaging how much food you eat, the calories, the points, the grams—it’s really about being more mindful and about shifting your focus to what we know is the healthiest way to eat.”

What you eat, and how you prepare it, has a profound impact not only on the way you look but on the way you feel. And in recent years, multiple scientific studies have confirmed the benefits of a healthy diet for reducing the risk factors for obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and even certain cancers.

In short, healthy eating is a profound part of living a longer, healthier, and happier life. In these six lessons delivered by Dr. Connie Guttersen and Chef Bill Briwa, two master instructors from The Culinary Institute of America, you’ll discover the specific nutritional benefits of foods commonly found in grocery stores, what’s true and what’s false about nutrition and diet, how specific culinary techniques and ingredients can transform healthy foods into taste sensations, why international cuisines are a key component of a healthy diet, and, most important, how easy and fun it is to cook with health and nutrition in mind.  ~ Includes Hardbound Full Color Companion Book ~
